Question about wicker furniture?

I just bought a old set at a second hand store.It really needs to be clean and painted.I cleaned it with bleach water but it still looks pretty worn.I always heard that you can’t paint wicker because it need to breath.Can anyone tell me if its true.Or how to refinish it?
