What should I use to cover deck trellis to shield from rain/debris?

Online Biz asked:

Hi,

We have a large deck that we are refinishing and about a 12′ x 10′ section of the deck has a trellis covering it. The trellis simply consists of 4 posts and horizontal slats, so it is mostly open. We have recently purchased some expensive outdoor wicker furniture and a table with a propane fire pit…so I would like to shield this area from rain and falling leaves, helicopters, etc from the huge tree above it…as it would be our only “covered” area.

My problem is that i’m not sure what to use…I don’t want it to be ugly (tarp), but I also want it to be effective. I found a sunshade here: http://www.kingcanopy.com/product/pc-20011-12 . I’m thinking that since the big tree blocks a good deal of rain it might do the trick. Anyone have experience with how much water they repel? Any other suggestions as to what i should go with here?

Thanks
John

Painting wicker furniture advice is needed?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
BMD asked:

We have natural looking wicker furniture that we want to paint black. Need advice.

Do we need to prime it first?
Should we use oil or latex based?
Should we use any kind of cleaner/varnish remover b-4 we paint?

My husband seems to think we need to first use a remover to get old varnish off but it’s so weathered that I know that it will be easy to paint, and he thinks we need oil based paint. I am trying to explain to him that oil based is a nightmare and that we really don’t even need to prime since it’s natural and we are taking it to black. I’m surprised of his lack of knowledge about painting b/c the REASON for priming is to make sure that your have true color. Painting over red with primer enables a “clean slate” per sey, but paintin gover natural with black is sort of like a clean slate.

Anyway, this is turnign into a nighmare. I almost just want to sell the wicker furniture on ebay and buy NEW. This project could end up costing us our marrige (ha-ha).

Help
